Title: Whoot! New gun day!
Post by: the Ward on December 28, 2022, 12:34:25 PM
Well just joined the Sx4 guys! Been hemming and hawing over getting one for awhile. Today I just bit the bullet and bought it. It is the 3.5 with 26 inch barrel. Can't wait to pattern it. Going to see how the meadow creek mount fits.  Thanks Lunghit for making me spend money lol! I kept seeing the pics of yours yo posted and I really liked them!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221228/80b3be5329b788710019378cac58def7.jpg)
Dog thinks we are headed to get geese lol!

HAHA enjoy it. Love the SX's and the Meadow Creek is a perfect match for it. Love the woodland camo that gun will be a turkey killing machine. Post up picks of some patterns with it.

Will do! I have a few Inv. plus chokes from my browning i'm going to try. I was cleaning and lubing it
when i got it home yesterday and discovered that the shell lifter rubs on the shell stop/bolt release. It
looks like the factory ground or filed a bit away on the shell stop/bolt release where it makes contact. Going to take gun back over to
store to have them check it out and compare it to the other sx4's they have. Hopefully not an issue, but I've never seen something filed and polished on a brand new gun. Just my luck, ugh! Anyways, I really like it and hope it is a non issue. I do a lot of business at this shop, and know them well, so if it is a problem they will take care of it. Mocked up the meadow creek and fastfire on it, and it fits good. will probably have to raise the comb just a little bit to get a little better cheek weld, but nothing drastic. Love the woodland and cerekote combo. The cerekote tone is a bit darker than fde, it is closer to patriot brown to my eye, and i think it will virtually disappear in the woods.

This is the spot. Looks like it was filed or ground to clear?

I just looked at both my SX4 20's and they both have a very slight wear line where the carrier latch rubs the shell stop. Probably happens during the fast cycling at the shot. Nothing bad at all and I am not worried about it in the least.

Thanks for checking yours and passing on the info. I haven't shot mine yet, it looks like
it was ground down more than if it was

a rub mark. The shell lifter actually hits it and is pushed
over to side. When i push the lifter up, like when you would when you load a shell, it stops
when it contacts the ground area, and requires a little more effort to push it the rest of way
past it to full open. I cycled some dummy rounds through it and it cycled them fine though.
Probably nothing, but i'm going to run over this morning so they can check it out, and so it is documented
so if I have any issues down the road they can't say I modified something. Thanks again lunghit, I appreciate the info!

Just come out from shop. Good news! All the sx4's had the same mark.so it just must be how they are fitted from factory. So now I can proceed full steam ahead!

This going to be a dedicated turkey gun or are you going to remove the red dot and use it for anything else? I can't wait to start patterning in a few months!

Well I bought it with full intentions of a dedicated turkey gun,but the dang thing fits me
so good i want to try it on some clays now too, lol! I can't wait to do some patterning myself.
Looks like we are going to have a stretch of unseasonably warm weather coming up, so I'm going
to try and get some on paper. Can't wait!

Let us know how she shoots. With this warmer weather I am getting the itch to pattern and think about the spring season!

Did a little puttering around today. Dug out my browning inv+ chokes I had, and in
turkey chokes  found a factory full strut .640, carlson .680, truglo .665 and a briley
xtra full, constriction unknown. So i have something to start with. All these chokes shot
good in my bps upland depending on what shell i used. I have a lot of various 3" turkey ammo
stashed away, turkey thugs, magblends, win extended range, old rem hevishot and some old
winchester loads in the treebark camo boxes that shoot unbelievable in the .640 out of the browning.
Got my quake claw sling on, and played with sighting options. I have a box full of fiber optic sights,
and i really liked how the one set of truglo sights with the optional peep rear fit and worked on it. They
were the last set i had on the browning and worked great, but i had to lift my head a bit due to the drop
in the straight grip upland stock. They set on the sx4 great. Had the meadow creek/ff3 mount on too, it works well also. I am hoping it will shoot poi/poa
with the stock bead, as i would like to keep it simple, but if not, I have some good sight options ready to go. Just got to get some more patterning paper and the weather to co-operate, and then I'm going to give
it a try. I do want to try some 3.5s too, maybe some longbeards, xx's some federal grand slams or such.
Will update with pattern pics and such after testing.

Good luck I'm sure you will find a choke and load that's going to devastate some turkey brains lol. I only tried my SX4 20 gauge with the 26" barrel with just a bead and that gun has identical POA and POI. I kept it that way because sometimes I want to keep things simple and go with no sight. But 99% of the time I have a gun with a red dot with me while in the woods.

Nice gun.  Congratulations!

The Winchester SX4s are great guns.  I have two, a 12 gauge 24" "Universal Hunter" and a 20 gauge "Waterfowl" and they perform flawlessly.  My 12 gauge is my dual purpose buckshot/turkeyshot gun.  It really takes to bite out of heavy 3 1/2" 12 gauge 00 and XR rounds.

BTW, you may notice a tad bit of finish wear in the grooves inside the receiver where the bolt carrier slides.  I keep these grooves lubed with TW25B grease.  Any decent gun grease would work.

Here's my 12 gauge.

Thanks! Nice picture and your gun looks great! Thanks for the tip on greasing the rails, i will have to get some of that to try.I broke down the gun and cleaned it,
and lightly oiled it. I used some lucas heavy duty gun oil on the bolt and rails, I have used it in the past on my semi auto
pistols and it worked well. It is a heavy oil that clings pretty good, but not as good as a grease though.

Same here, been hunting with a red dot or a scope for awhile, just thought it might be fun to get back to the basics for a bit.
I just hope I don't run into any turkeys that look like this  :OGturkeyhead:   !!!

RMP,  how do you like the Trijicon? Is that the model that has the dual illumination
feature? And by the way..... :welcomeOG:
Title: Re: Whoot! New gun day!
Post by: RMP on January 03, 2023, 05:54:55 AM
I like that Trijicon on that shotgun a good deal.  It is a Dual Illuminated model with a 9 MOA green dot.  I used to have it on Glock pistol but the dual illimated is not ideal for pistol use.  So I moved it over to this SX4 to see how I would like it there.  It works well in that role.  It's fast, and the dot size is great for a shotgun.  The dual illuminated feature makes is so the dot self adjusts for brightness, so it's always sufficient outside.  The downside is that the lens is heavily tinted.  Outside, that is not a problem.

Thanks for the info RMP. I also prefer a larger dot for turkey. Mine all have 3moa
sized dots, they work ok, but sometimes hard to pick up quickly. My next dot will
be at least a 6. For close range shotgun work I just feel the bigger dot just works better,
at least for me.

Not yet, been going crazy wanting to get out and try it though! We had some
warm days here, but it was really windy, and I didn't feel like trying to deal with
that in an open field lol. I fixed my target stand, and am going to pick up some more
paper for patterning targets today.I also got some 3.5 #6 grand slams to try.I will certainly post up my results and pics as soon
as I can.

FINALLY! Got a decent day to shoot the new sx4, it shot dead on with the factory
bead, I am very happy about that. Recoil was o.k. cycled and functioned flawlessly. Shot several chokes and ammo I had on hand, will be posting
in the Winchester section as soon as I do the 10" counts, probably later today or tomorrow
morning. Really liking the gun so far. Thanks Lunghit for putting me on to this gun!
