Title: Biggest Bird Yet
Post by: YukonC on April 06, 2020, 03:58:09 PM
Just this morning. First day of first season in IL. Got lucky and he was roosted 60 yards from me. I somehow didn't make a team but I thought I would share! 10" beard, 1 1/2" spurs, and 28.5 lbs. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/1f8c9f4dc7f7741fa193619b6fe434a4.jpg)

Haven't run the numbers but that bird has to score in the 70s. That's a stud for sure.

Congrats, monster bird for sure, have to shoot him in self defense! Did he gobble or growl??

Ha. He gave one gobble just one and it startled the hell out of me as there were a half dozen gobbling about 200 yards to my south for 30 minutes. I ended up having to shoot this bird left handed. Thank god for the red dot! He had a much Deeper and more powerful gobble than the rest which were all probably 2 year olds. Not sure on this age but I would say 3-4.

Dang man, any bigger and you could register that sucker as a Angus bull. That is probably a lifetime bird, be proud of that trophy. I been at it over 45 years, 9 states and a few dead gobblers and I don't have any that heavy. I have killed some darn nice birds, but my heaviest is 24.75 pounds. Congrats, maybe you can convince old gobbler to open a lottery draft and take bids on putting you on  a team....donate the proceeds to charity.....  Just having fun. You know if you hadn't killed him outright you could have saddled him up and rode him to the vehicle.  :turkey2:

Funny as hell. I knew it was heavy as I had to haul it 3/4 a mile to the truck. Was shocked when I hung him from the scale.

That's a stud for certain. Biggest I've ever killed was just a touch over 26#. Had 1.5" spurs and a 12" beard. I've never shot anything in the 28# range. Congratulations.

My grandfathers friend once killed a bird that weighed nearly 32#. Guy was on oxygen and had a permit to hunt from his truck. It was the last turkey hunt old Mac had been on. He shot the bird and got it mounted. Shortly thereafter, my grandfather contacted the landowner about going back to hunt. He told him he could but to keep an eye out for his tame bird. Needless to say, ol' Mac shot the farmers taa as me turkey. Looked just like an eastern. Pap told the man and compensated him for the bird. Mac was none the wiser. He died later that fall.

Once more, congratulations man. You got a true trophy there.

If it had a better/thicker beard, I would of done a full mount..... for the cost of mounting it's got to be damn close to perfect. Maybe next time?

That's what I said too. But, will there be a next time. I'm not much for mounting stuff. Always said if I killed a deer over 120", he'd be mounted. Last year I shot one 129" and a little change. I'm thinking now it's gonna be 135"+. It's just one of those things I guess. Pile of money to just hang on the wall. Totally understand where you're coming from though.

It was a tame bird. Mac had no idea. We butchered birds a few years ago. The smallest bird in the bunch was a 27# hen. The gobblers were all between 35 and 38#. The bird he shot looked just like an Eastern but it was very much a tame bird. Had he known, he could've gotten out of the truck and fed it from his hand.

Well, here in southern Illinois we do have bigger birds but average in the low 20s. That said my last bird was a 2yr old that weighed 18lbs. So there not all hefty.
