Title: First box call build
Post by: HillclimberWV on February 27, 2022, 03:01:04 PM
So this is my first completed box call. Its not been finished or sealed but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I dont have any money in it. Was free lumber i had laying around. Poplar body and white oak lid. Going to tinker with it and try some other lids i think i got this one too thick. If anybody has suggestions on the tuning let me know.

That call will hunt all day long. Get the right chalk (red or blue) so it grabs a little bit more and practice the clucks so they're a bit crisper. Thats a great first box and deserves to hunt.

Thanks i appreciate that. I'm using the yellow heart poplar box i got off of you as a benchmark for my calls. Hopefully someday i can make one that sounds as good as it.

Over the weekend i built a companion to the call and sealed them both. The second has a much lighter lid that i think plays better. Ill try to post more sound files this weekend. Now to the bad. I'm not crazy about the minwax tung oil finish. I'm just not happy with the way it changed the poplar colors. Was looking for a more natural in the wood look. Made the grain on the oak lids pop nicely but didn't produce the desired effect on the poplar. Any suggestion for a better finish?

Plenty of turkey in that call.  Oak has very open grain and that may be some of the reason for the 'scratchyness' sound and as others have said this is a very good 1st effort, I would say you are on your way to much more fun.  Now go slay a nice gobbler with your own call this season and you'll surely be hooked on call making.

Nice job HCWV!!  Keep up the good work, I retired the end of February and want to start making some scratch box calls.  Thanks for posting your work, I listened to the sound bite, sounds very good to me.

Your boxes look and sound great! I built my wife and I A box call and got to harvest A bird with it last spring, it's pretty neat. They are ash top and bottom with cedar sides and oak ends.

Thanks Joe! I'd absolutely encourage you to make your own call. Its hard to describe how cool it felt when i got that box to make its first turkey sound. Its very gratifying to say the least.  Now i just can't wait to get it in the woods. Good luck to you this spring.

I lay it on its side and cup it makes it easy to purr, cutt and soft yelp. I have several box calls and the one sider is my personal favorite.

Was able to get a couple of sound files made. I think i got lucky on these first two calls. The third and fourth calls both had a dead side and went into the wood stove. Let me know what you guys think. Also i don't mind criticism if you have any.
Both bodies and lids came out of the same boards. Only difference is lid geometry and weight.

They look great! Kudos for joining the club.
Hard to beat the feeling of achieving the sound you desire and take it to the woods.

I'd like to buy or trade for one of your first few please. Pm me if you wish.
Avoiding knots and good grain orientation will help maintain consistency.

I would just like to update on my progress. I did manage to call in a gobbler with the call with the rounded lid. My setup was poor so i didn't seal the deal.
That brings me to this offseason. I wasn't satisfied with the calls so i decided to tweak the design and make another batch of calls. I also traded a call with Kip from Ferocious calls and had the pleasure of talking with him about call making. He was very helpful in my call making journey and can't thank him enough.
I have 4 calls poplar boxes 2 with locust 2 with ironwood lids. Will try to get pictures up later. Any advice or criticism on sound would be appreciated. Also sorry for the road noise but the weather was pretty so i recorded outside.

I am impressed. They all sound good, think I like the locust/popular the best. But as has already been said, you have a bright future in front of you on building boxes.

Was able to use one of locust over poplar calls to bring this guy all the way to the gun. Ive gotten mixed results so far this spring with  my boxes but he sure liked the sound of that one.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230506/e63f552c653f3a6eb7479fb5121db390.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230506/b22bd67ae24e314c7b8bc9004a31e299.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230506/99cd7c1ca8d7c2cee23e2e37be550702.jpg)
