Title: Versamax with jebs .655 and federal tss 3" 9s
Post by: vtstrutter on March 24, 2021, 05:54:19 PM
Shot my remington versamax today. It's the turkey model with the 22" barrel. Shooting a jebs headhunter .655 and 3" federal HW tss 9s. Got 266 in 10.

Have you ever tried any of the other TSS loads? Obviously not necessary since you've got a great pattern just curios as I'm shooting a similar set up.

I haven't shot any other TSS yet. I'm going to try some Apex since it shoots great from my 20ga.

Good pattern. Keep us informed on the Apex load.

Thanks. Will do. I'm thinking I'm going to stay with 3 inch loads for the Apex, not 3.5"

Will kill a turkey but needs work for the tungsten world . Try some different constrictions .

I agree. My 20ga gets better patterns. Going to switch it up and see what I can do

More constriction or less?

I know this is a twelve gauge and a lot of the 12's are in the 400 plus territory. In fact the gentlemen who responded prior to me suggesting you can do better is getting 440 out of his 870. However, if I counted your pellets correctly, it looks like you could drop your red dot ONE click down and move that pattern to a 290 ten inch pattern. That will give you approximately 175 in the ten at fifty and you would still have in the ball park of 105 in the ten at 60 yards. Anything in the range of a 100 pellets or more in the ten ring with TSS is dead dead. I've only shot one bird in my life beyond forty, and I figure you are not looking to lob hail mary's either, but at 290 pellets in the ten give or take a few, you have way more than all you need to kill birds at forty plus yards.

The only thing really wrong with that pattern is price when it comes to shooting 280-300 out of a 12 gauge. As you know, You can shoot 280-300 out of most 20 gauge guns with the right choke and save ten dollars on every box of shells. You may be reloading, but the cost goes down either way. But thanks for sharing, as I love to see what guns are doing and appreciate guys like you who care enough to make sure their guns will kill birds instead of wounding them. Good luck in the woods.

Yeah I know this is not the best pattern from a 12ga especially with TSS. I think part of the issue is the federal shells. I want to try the Apex 9s with the 2oz payload. I think that will do better. If not then I'll try a different constriction choke

More times than not, the apex will shoot better for me than the Federal. May not be the same for all but has been for me.  Hope you see a big jump in pattern density with the Apex TSS.

If you decide to hunt down more chokes, and if you want a pretty darn good choke alternative for a much better price, maybe think about trying the Patternmaster Ananconda Striker in a .670 which has gas over constriction. They are only 59.00 and I have yet to see one not shoot everything you put through it pretty good. But I personally would try the Apex before I did anything as far as a new choke, and you may find a big jump in density with the Apex loads without needing to spend more money on chokes. Jebs are excellent chokes and a different load like the Apex may love it.
