So im looking for a new scratcher i have a s&s sounds awesome .im looking for something a little bigger ,better to hold on too.any info would be appreciated.pics would be awesome..thanks

Scott Basehore's is bigger if that's really what you want. I think SS's are better to my ear. The padauk /butternut, reheart/holly, yellow heart /mineral poplar all sound different and are fantastic. I've got maybe 10 SS scratchers and those are the three I normally grab.

I just ordered a Chris Brumfeil that is a little bigger than most of the others I have seen. I have a couple Jeff Whites that I really like to. I need to get one from the SS guys sometime also I have heard nothing but great things from them
Physical size isn't much different than ss but Lonnie Gilberts scratchers have a base on them that give you more to hold. They sound really good too.

I don't have any of Lonnie Gilbert's scratchers but I've run em and they're pretty good. Jrrodc has a few. The strikers were kinda flat. We were running calls and I happened to try some SS strikers on it and those calls really came to life.
Tim Bullock makes a great scratcher and it is bigger than SS.
Scott Basehore gets my vote. I have a Alaskan yellow cedar of his that flat out kills birds. I am waiting on a butternut I have on order.

Very good point made here. Just like pot calls, strikers should be experimented with on scratchboxes. Some won't work at all and some sound even better. Main thing is to keep them sanded and chalked.
And my personal vote goes to Basehore all day long. I have a few of his and I highly respect him as a callmaker. The all cedar is my favorite one.

Another one worth trying is L&L, Greg makes a double sided cedar that runs awesome. that one and a SS have been my best producers

I really just got introduced to scratch boxes, and have a couple from Lonnie Gilbert, and one from SS... I have a preference for the Lonnie Gilbert calls, although I have nothing negative to say about SS either...
Scratch boxes have become my favorite toy to play with in the woods... Box calls are a bit louder, but I can get some volume on the scratchers as well. I do feel you can put a bit more "emotion" into a scratcher... And the low end clucks, chirps, and purring is great on those scratchers... Great for that quiet tree yelp as well.

I have two SS and one from Tim Bullock. Love them all, the Bullock is bigger and all sound great.
I probably have 50 scratch boxes. Some of my favorites are Basehore, Joe Sherrod, Mike Lapp, Tim Bullock, SS.

fordhunt, our very own Kentuckyheadhunter makes a XL version of the Chattahoohee Chatterbox. Bigger than his normal sized scratchboxes and it has the volume to boot. It will rival a box call in volume with excited cutting and yelping. Does the soft calling as well. I have calls from most of the callmakers mention here including 2 from Scott. This will be my first year hunting the XL and I'm looking foward to it. Just thought I'd throw that out there for future reference.
I have a ton of scratchers...Along with the ones mentioned, Ernie Fetters (shade mountain calls) are excellent. Rick Ferlitta (Cypress Creek calls) makes some of the nicest ones there are. Lee Bowles is hard to beat and Mike Lapp is a master. Eric Rice would be worth a look also.

Chattahoochee Chatterbox IS a nice little call, and yes, plenty of volume if you want it and quiet if you don't. That'd be a good one to have and let's be honest, who wouldn't want a call with a name like that!
Allen is a nice fella' also...
I just got one from Allen - it's one of his regular scratchboxes - not a witches fiddle or chatterbox. I'm not sure what he calls it, but it's a great call that will be in my vest this season.

I have around 8 scratch boxes and have played maybe 12 others at shows. To me the all cedar scratcher by Beard Hunter Calls sounds the best with realistic yelps. Not real fancy but great sound!!

Shadetree, Fetters, SS, and No Bull are all top notch quality, tone and playability.

Gary Herd....He makes his with a handle on them. Great guy also!
Wendell Jolley butternut or mulberry or osage are all great little scratchers and Wendell is a just plain nice guy.
You wouldn't go wrong with Jeff White. I like his bloodwood with a sycamore soundboard and his maple with a mahogany soundboard is a really nice one...
And, yes, Gary Herd makes a cool little scratcher that sounds real sweet...
