Title: 870 28" and Lead loads
Post by: quackaddict on February 08, 2019, 03:35:05 PM
I've got an older 870 3" gun that I was planning on toting this year. Have two turkey chokes, a Truglo Gobble Stopper Xtreme(I think it's a .665) and a Comp-N-Choke .665. Anyone have a suggestion for choke/shell combo? I figured it'd be hard to go wrong with some #6 Longbeards, but I know that stuff patterns SUPER tight inside of 20, so you better be holding it on them pretty tight.

Here's my 40 yard pattern with #4 XR's using the Gobble Stopper Exteme choke and a 3" Rem 870 from probably 2004. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190209/25f9fb0e77be997d11c99fed464056b2.jpg)

I really like the Hevi Shot Triple Beard out of my 11-87 through a .662. Longboards were way too tight for my liking.

How were your 40 yard patterns with the triple beard shells?

I would shoot what you currently have and see how it patterns. You can always body shoot a bird inside 20 yards if you are worried the patterns too tight. That is what I do with my Super Mag and LongBeards. Its easier to pick out pellets from the breast meat then to eat crow in my opinion.

I've got a couple rounds of Mag Blends and a couple of #6 longbeards. I'll see what those look like on paper...just curious if anyone had another lead shell I should check out. I've thought about trying some Kent Fastlead 3" 6's too. $18 for 25 won't kill me if they don't pattern that good.

Federal strut shok #6 works really well in my 870 28" bbl with a lohman choke. Might want to check out winchester super x in #6 also. Buds gun shop has them for $5.30 a box. I'm getting ready to order 10 boxes myself. Fiocchi golden pheasant in a 25 box will probably out perform the Kent fast lead.
