Title: Fly down sounds
Post by: Southerngobbler on April 10, 2019, 07:16:04 PM
What do ya'll use to imitate a hen flying down. I have a medium sized plastic shopping type bag that when shaken fast sounds like a fly down. It has tricked a few gobblers but it also requires lot of movement. I have to be located where my view of the roost tree is totally blocked. What other ideas does everyone have.

I use an old camo pants leg cut off below the knee.  One end is sewn shut.  Grab each end of it and pop it like your trying to pull it in half.  Very realistic.  Takes up almost no room and has many uses from a rag to a sock to cover the birds head when I carry him out with my tote.

Dried pheasant wings work great...  If you hunt them or know someone that does successfully.

You can also use the tips or ends of a regular turkey wing.

A hat also works....  But I would rather use actual wings.

I have plenty of dried turkey wings. Do you just slap them against your leg like if you would a hat?

Yes or against a tree. I use a section of dried wing trimmed down a little to save on space. Works good, and nothing like whooping your leg with a metal buckle on a cap. Wakes you up better than any coffee.

I jump out of a tree while doing a fly down cackle.

I overheard a man at the local diner talk about what he did with his buddy and the effort they put in was incredible. One gentleman would climb up into the tree, do a fly down cackle, and then his buddy would beat the ground with old turkey wings.

I still haven't decided if this was brilliant or just being waaaay too extra. I am leaning towards the later.

a lot of time I will just take my hat off and hit against my leg. usually followed dragging a branch through the leave if there are dry leaves around.

An old boonie hat, I like the pant leg idea. I bet that sounds better than my hat.

It is NOT brilliant.

If I think I can get away with it, I have stood up and flapped the wings down...  I do not think it makes a difference, and probably makes for a better chance of getting busted by the birds....

Climbing a tree at daylight to make turkey sounds in the tree seems like a poor idea on multiple levels.

All I know is that if I get my fat butt up a tree it is a sure fire emergency!

Yep, only if something is chasing me....

About the only way I could get up in a tree is if I stepped on a snake, at which point I may go clear over the tree.
