Title: Remington 1187 12 Gauge SPS-T 3" 21"
Post by: RED NECK on January 05, 2022, 01:56:15 PM
I found a local Remington 1187 SPS-T 3" and sent the man a deposit and I will be heading down his way late next week and I will stop in and pick it up.The Gun is what looks to be in excellent shape and is a 3" short barreled turkey model,I believe that is Greenleaf camo?...I have been looking for a few years to add an older Remington in an older pattern to go with my other 1187 3.5" I bought in 2020.

I am excited, I had a few others I was ready to purchase but when this became availiable I jumped on it right away.

It was a great find for the collection and for the price, a steal. I already have a handful of rem chokes in my collection but I am going to start looking for another, maybe two to add as well.If it shoots like my other 1187 with bead then there will be no reason to add any sights but If it does not.I am going to use some fiber optic sights on this gun.

Looks to be of the same vintage, this one was from 1988 and in some different camo. I added the cantilever and scope!

Great find!

Beautiful gun, great find. I love the Old camo Remi's. I picked up the sister gun to yours, brand new in box last summer. It is the Greenleaf 870 SPS Turkey. The Greenleaf ones are hard to find. I plan on taking mine out opening day. I put an Indian Creek tube in it, it shoots Hevi-13  #7, and Longbeard 6's fantastic. Best of luck with it, post some pattern pics.....great find

Last summer a used Greenleaf 870 sold for over 1800 dollars on gunbroker. New ones in box north of 2000 dollars. 1187's fetch a bit more......Best time to sell these is March/April......crazy numbers for these...

I jumped on it for what I paid, in Canadian dollars would be about $675 American.I am going to go tomorrow and pick it up as I changed my schedule and its about an hours drive. The gun was used a handful of times by an older man for turkey hunting,he said it may have been shot 15 times and in the woods 10 times, from the pictures and what he told me,mint shape, cleaned and babied the few times he had it out.

That is a fantastic price. You can't touch them for anywhere near that. Best of luck with it, they are great Guns and pattern real good.

I went and picked gun up,Its in better shape than even I thought by pictures,Its litterally been sitting in a locker for 15 years, the owner bought it new and used it for 4-5 years hunting turkeys,2-3 times year,he said he maybe has put 25 shells through it,if that. Its a 99/100,no wear on loading area, none in barrel at all.He said it originally came with a sling and a turkey choke but his grandson had borrowed them years ago. I also purchased 3 boxes of hevi #6 in 3" and 3 boxes of mag blend in 3" ,It was basically 55% of what most places are asking for it now up here.

The Remington 1187 23" 3.5" that I bought new in box in 2020, has more wear from me shooting it 15 times and hunting with it a handful of times the last 2 years,so I know that this gun is as near "new" as you can get. He didn't know they were "collectibles" and I didn't say anything. I am glad I seen this gun yesterday,I just happend to be checking for barrels on the same site.

That looks great!  I picked up an 11-87 Special purpose Turkey a year ago Sept.  I think I paid $400 for it, but it is a 2000 model, not quite the one everyone wants but close.  I think it has what they call Original Mossy Oak Break Up.  I think it is the next version after the greenleafs.  You'll really like yours!

I also have a 2004 Rem 1187 sp 23" 3.5" that I bought brand new in box in 2020,Its in Original Mossy oak break up.It shoots amazing patterns with longbeards and stock turkey choke.

I have these Rem chokes in my collection already-

-Carlson's Longbeard xr .660
-Primos tightwad .660
-Primos Tss Jellyhead .650
-Primos Jellyhead Maximum .660
-Remington Wingmaster Hd turkey/predator .670

and the original stock turkey choke that came with my Rem 1187 23" 3.5" that is not leaving my other gun.

I am going to try and find an original jellyhead tube. I had one years back and sold it with the gun and I haven't found one anywhere to replace it.

I finnaly did a little research on the choke that came with my 2004 1187 and its a .665 Remington Super Full, .665 seems to be the sweet spot for the Rem 12 gauges.

https://cartridgecollectors.org/content/catalogs/REMINGTON/1993-Rem-DuPont-Retail%20Catalog.pdf

I can remember reading through all these hunting magazines at this time,as It was the start of me hunting,as we had to be 12 to "hunt" and even though I had been hunting with my father since I was just a wee guy.1992-1994 were my first 3 years as my own hunter.

I would love to snag one of the 1187/870 in the SPS-BG Bottomland.

I think maybe I will start to turn my thoughts to a Remington old school "collection". It would actually be a little more challenging and a goal, I can't remember seeing a lot of these at gun shows the last decade but I do remember a few here and there and I never really paid much attention. I will now if we ever get back to life.

I am going to buy the original turkey choke this gun came with tonight,Its the same one that came with my 2004 model.I did get the ic choke but he gave the turkey choke to his grandkid a decade ago. Oh well, they are cheap, and work very well from my experiences.

It's an addicting obsession collecting the Old Remingtons. They are tough to come by, but they are out there. I really like the look and feel of the 870's. They are so well built, solid and when you pump one, you can feel the quality. Good luck in your search, you seem to find guns where you are easier than here. Your lucky. Be safe, send some pattern pics....

Yes, I love collecting all turkey shotguns but looking for older and hard to find ones will make it even better as I'll actually check more little shops and little gun shows for them, and not really go looking for other ones.

I found and purchased an original jellyhead and I also have the original choke that this gun came with on the way. I will look for a new sling for this gun and my shopping for it should be complete. It won't be for a few months that I get out to shoot as I don't want to waste any ammo shooting in the middle of winter but I will post up pictures when I do.

Collecting turkey guns is truly addictive. I have been fortunate to have worked and with guys from all over the country who have helped locate some Old School Remingtons. I have quite an extensive collection now. I am at 62 turkey guns and buying more when the price or condition is right.
The majority of them are Remingtons but Beretta Benelli Franchi Winchester and Thompson Center are awesome guns as well. Beat of Luck to everyone on their searches for any and all guns they admire.

I am getting close to 50,I have never counted but I am going to say 46-50 by now. I have some,a lot that I may never hunt with, or hunt with again. I am not really buying them to hunt hard with them. I am doing it because I enjoy it, I am not buying them for any other reason.

I will hunt with every one of them, at least a few times. I have buddies who spend $15 000 every few years for a snowmobile and then drive it for 5 hours every winter. I don't feel bad with my hobbies. Life is short and I am going to enjoy it!

I ended up ordering a few of these slings( Sims Vibration Kodiak Lt) the week I bought this gun, and I may pick up some fiber optic rifle sights in case the bead won't shoot poa/poi.

The slings are not quick detach like the others I purchased in the past but I do like the way they fit me, I just installed one yesterday.

I am going this afternoon to shoot and pattern this gun,If it will not shoot bead to poa then I am going to attach a set of truglo fiber optic sights.

I also purchased a 2nd identical gun about 10 minutes ago, in excellent shape, for 35 dollars cheaper than I bought the first one. This one is a gift for my Father though and will ship Monday, I should have it mid to late next week. I wasn't passing it up, he listed it last night and I sent him a message that I would buy it, got up at 6am to a reply of "Yes, you were the 1st reply, and the only one not to lowball" I don't dicker If it's a fair price, It was a great price. I spoke with the older man on phone at 6am and then sent payment.

I will be shooting....

-Hevi 3" #6
-Hevi 3" Mag blend
-Federal 3" 3rd degree(new) 5-6-7
-Federal 3" Grandslam #5
-Browning 3" bxd #4
-Federal 3" #7 tss
-Winchester Longbeard 3" #6
-Winchester Double xx 3" #5

Well, thats what I am taking with me, I may not shoot everything because If I can get it to shoot #7 tss well from one of the handful of chokes, I will shoot them, so I don't feel like I wasted my money on the 6 I have left but I am open to shooting any of them if I get a pattern I like, from a yardage I choose.

I am going to wait until around 2ish when it's warm, or should I say, not freezing cold to shoot today.

I missed out on a Rem 1187 NWTF 23" 3.5" Monte carlo stock, rifled sight model in Mossy oak break up from 2005 last week for a great price too. By time I seen it, It was just sold within an hour.  I would have loved that gun in my collection.

I have to be realistic, I have never seen any of the other guns from 1991-1996 Remington turkey guns anywhere up here, or online but I sure would love to find more 1991-2007 model Remingtons, I am about tapped out for buying other turkey guns other than a semi .410.

I put a bid in on 2 other rem chokes this morning, a .665 Indian creek and a .665 patternmaster code black. If I get them, I will give him choice of one and keep other one.

I am just glad most are too lazy to get up at 3am to turkey hunt up here, It really is not popular other than a select few, and even then they do it for a few days and then get sick of it. I would turkey hunt 365 days a year if legal, just to listen to them and see them and of course fire the gun a few times a year so I can have turkey poppers.

I bow hunt for 5 months a year for bear and whitetail, sometimes moose, and turkey hunt for 5 weeks, and a bit in the fall and most "bow" hunters are using crossbows, I am not against them, but It ain't bow hunting, it is hunting.  The day of the rifle banger is long gone up here, not a lot of gangs, or hunters, It is just different from when I was a kid. I am a bow hunter, so I like being alone. I also hunt private, but even our public land has nobody on it, I cut my teeth as a kid on it. I still hit it up 1-2 a year for deer or turkey, just because nobody is around.

I just bought the patternmaster, for 1/2 of what it would be if I bought it new, which is a ridicolous price up here, I think they are overpriced and overated but I'll test it.

This gun shoots a little to the right with bead and poa, with a few chokes, like my other rem 1187,not a lot but enough that I added rifle sights. I shot the .650 primos jellyhead tss choke, I have shot that choke with 4 different guns and 5-6 types of different ammo, I am going out and saying, I hate that choke, It's been garbage in all of my guns, It's a piece of ...imo.. I then switched to the original jellyhead, which usually shoots amazing but I was not overly impressed with it at 40 yards shooting longbeard 3" #6's or Hevi shot mag blend, I then screwed in my longbeard xr choke, and shot tss #7 and longbeard #6's in 3" at 40 yards, and a little further.

The longbeards are a superior pattern for me, the tss shoots good but not $90 dollars a box good, the longbeard 3" #6's pattern better and will be what I shoot from the gun. I kept a few of my targets, I need to shoot one more shell of longbeard #6 because I had to adjust the rifle sights and I over adjusted on last shot and was in a rush and had to go. I am going back next weekend with my 20 gauges and I'll double check this gun, but I am sticking with longbeards in 12 gauge until I can shoot tss #9's, Its a waste of money in #7's in every gun and choke I have shot it in.

I'll try and post a pic or 2 up sometime this weekend, or next week. I am busy and don't have time tonight to upload. I am happy with the gun. If I was to nit pick at all, It's that I am not overly impressed with tss #7's or hevi shot in 12 gauges, I'll be sticking with longbeards, I patterned 4 12 gauges today and the longbeards in 3-3.5" #6's patterned better than anything else I have, I knew it would, I need to just realize that I am happy and keep my money in my pocket. I was never really on the 12 gauge tss train, but I am now completely off and won't buy any tss #7's again, but I test the 9's for sure.

I received my .660 patternmaster and had to adjust my rifle sights back ,as this choke did not shoot to the right at all, It shot to the left a tad with fiber optics adjusted to left, I fired a few shells at 40 yards without adjusting, and I patterned at 50-and 60, to see which shell held up. I am not going to post my targets as Shannon does not want them,so I'll follow his lead. But I patterned 3" Tss #7 Federals, Hevi #6, Hevi Mag Blend and Longbeard #6's.

The Hevi #6's patterned out to 40 yards,I didn't shoot them at any further distance, the mag blends were superior out to further distance, and the longbeards were even better. The Federal Tss #7's are good to 40 yards,I wasn't impressed again with them at further distance, they didn't hold as good a pattern as the mag blends or longbeards.

I'll be using long beard, hevi #6's or mag blends and honestly out to what I'd shoot a turkey at, all 3 are awesome, I am really impressed with the patternmaster .660 choke. I'll keep it in gun.

I took pictures of all my targets, the shells that impressed me the most with this choke were the mag blends, I have always been happy with longbeards.

I was really shocked at how much straighter this choke shot every shell than the other chokes I tested last week, with this choke, the gun shoots bead, poa. I still kept my fiber optics on as I like the peep sights for turkey hunting.

I found one at 40 yards, remember this is before I adjusted my fiber optics back, they were setup for the previous choke. This is a rangefinded 40 yards with 12 gauge 3" hevi mag blends with the patternmaster code black turkey .660.

I will never be a pellet counter, I could not be bothered to count them. It just is not something I enjoy, and have yet to need to do it.
