Title: Burris FF3 or Vortex Venom
Post by: Squirrels on April 16, 2019, 10:37:51 AM
I'm new here, looked a little and didn't see a thread with similar title. If it has been discussed I apologize and please point me in that direction.
I have a M3020 Turkey Edition on order, I am going to put a red dot on it and was looking at these two. Anyone who has had BOTH give me pros and cons of one over the other. Thanks

Go with the venom. I've got both but the 10 light settings are much better than the 3 on the Burris

Thanks, I was leaning that way. Plus, I think I read somewhere that the Venom turns on at whatever setting it was on when turned off last and the Burris always turns on to auto. Just what a read, not saying right or wrong.

That's true on the venom part. It turns on on either auto or the manual level you turned it off at. Which is really nice bc I've mostly been using the manual mode and I have grown kinda fond of a particular setting on manual so it's nice not having to click back through or try to remember which number setting I like each morning.

Don't overlook the Leupold Delta Point Pro....I have been a Burris guy for a lot of years(even own the originals) but the DPP is the real deal.

I just put one on a new 20 gauge that I'm getting ready and I have been very impressed thus far...just my $.02

Best of luck!!

I have both and like them equally. What has been stated about the Venoms (10) settings is true but I leave em both set on sensor and they adjust themselves to whatever light is available accordingly...much easier than fooling with the little switches...

The problem with that is it over adjusts and the dot starbursts. I had to tape over the ff2 sensor or it was horrible. The venom does it in auto mode as well but not as bad

Exactly why I lean to the Venom.  I have both and like the Venom much more.  Plus it has more moa adjustment and I like the view better.

I have a Burris FF3 on my single shot 20. It is light and has worked great. Never tried the Vortex one.

Well, as the OP, to give an update. First thanks for the info guys. I was settled on the Venom and then I stumbled upon a FF3 at a price I could not resist. I will rock the FF3 for a bit to see how it goes. Now if my M3020 Turkey Edition would arrive......

You will be happy with the FF3.  Deal or not it's a great sight.

Agreed.

I love the FF3 I have on my gun.  I have not found an instance where one of the three settings isn't appropriate for any given light situation. I have never felt that I need an "in between" setting under any condition.  Not that its right or wrong, but I personally don't see how 3 times as many settings for brightness make one a clearly better sight than the other.  I know that I personally like the second setting for pretty much all conditions (except for at first light right off the roost) so I can cycle through to that setting by pressing the button 3 times without having to actually look at the sight.

Also,  It takes me less than a second to cylcle through all five settings (if you count off as one of the settings) to get the whatever setting necessary.

Been using a FF2 for three years and I love it! Hasn't failed me yet. Shot one left handed this year too

Warranty is great on both.. both great companies to deal with. I have 4 different FF3 - they are all great. I just use auto setting. As for the battery cover -  the issue is with the battery...not cover. Once I started using Duracell batteries.. the cover goes on smooth as glass. There must be some micro differences in the some of the batteries.  I'm sure some other batteries will work great as well. I just discovered this by accident when changing them one year....so I have continued to use Duracell.

Looking at Burris and Vortex information and they both have the auto setting for brightness so that issue not a deciding one. They both have a forever warranty also.
Burris claims weather resistant. Vortex water proof, (I've never had an issue with Burris even in a downpour).
The multicoating on the lens on Burris is between two pieces of glass. Vortex is on the lens surface. That could be an issue.
Burris operating temp. is -10 to 130...Vortex 22 to 122. For turkey hunters that should be a non issue except if you're out west early, that 22 degrees on the Vortex might be on the edge of it's capability.
Vortex has ten brightness settings in manual mode and an auto setting. Burris has 3 manual and an auto. I normally use the auto only on my Burris. I question the value of 10 settings.
Weight, .9 oz. for Burris, 1.1 oz. for Vortex. No real difference there.
Both have top load battery. That's an important feature since you don't need to take the sight off of the firearm to replace battery.
Pricewise. The Burris lists for $299. It sells for around $236. The Vortex lists for $329 and sells for around $229, so no significant difference there.
So, there's the comparison. Both great sights. I don't think you'd go wrong with either.

I just bought a FF3 a week ago. I put it on a Encore with a 15" 45/410 barrel. It has 3 brightness adjustments and the auto setting shares the same 3 brightness settings. Or at least it looks that way to me. It works very good in both bright sun and at very last light. So far i haven't come up with a reason to not use the auto setting. But being as this is a new to me turkey pistol after hunting it my opinion could change. I really don't see that happening. I have been at this hunting stuff for 40 some odd years  :). And test my stuff to the extreme before hunting it.

Sight in getting the heart of my pattern around the dot was very easy. They do supply a very small flathead screwdriver to adjust the sight. Id hold on to that because you pretty much need it.

All in all so far i like it.
