Title: Some more folk art......
Post by: Tarheel on July 11, 2022, 02:48:55 PM
Sometimes I have to try the darker woods, even though the artwork doesn't always show up that well in photographs. I especially like walnut Turpin boxes. The walnut Turpin boxes make that raspy yawk that gets those old boss gobblers' attention. This group of Turpin boxes was difficult to let go and deserve to be taken to the turkey woods and hunted....

Yup that works too. If the birds aren't talking, I can admire the artwork.

The bottom right hen box pictured above is made from dalbergia granadillo with an ebony lid.  Dalbergia granadillo is harder than hard maple...or at least this piece was.  This isn't a wood I would choose again because of how difficult it was to work with, but it makes an exceptional hen box call.  I cut out two hen boxes from the granadillo, and the other one I'm carving.  I can say without hesitation I will never carve another granadillo call. Hopefully, I'll finish it in my lifetime....LOL!  Granadillo is tough enough to withstand the rigors of someone hunting with it, even though it is carved. Dogwoods in bloom always makes me think of boss gobblers gobbling.....I've got a lot of polishing to do.

This Turpin style box call is made from old growth teak with a Honduras rosewood lid with woodburned pinecones with a raspy old hen sound.  It's just a really nice turkey call with a folk art flavor.  When you just want to keep it simple, this works.  I've tried to talk myself into selling this box several times, but I keep setting it aside "for later" to keep anyone from saying they want it.  Every time I pick it up and play it, it just plays and sounds better and better.

The sound file you recently did was great-and the artwork is a beautiful way to add appeal to the hunter.  I love it

Thank you all for the compliments and kind words.  I have had the pleasure of seeing these calls going all over the United States.  Hopefully, some day I will get back pictures of these calls with dead turkeys and get to hear stories of them actually being hunted.

Just finished up the woodburning on one of a pair of regular Turpin style boxes.  I've tried to do a little something different by continuing a hunting scene through a time sequence on two separate boxes while trying to capture some of the old traditions of turkey hunting.  The turkey hunter doing the calling is using a wingbone.  Since the scene depicts a time before camouflage, a blind was often built to hide the hunters.  The picture does not do the call fair justice....

I especially enjoyed the caller and shooter illustration.  Reminds me of the photos/drawings in the old wildlife magazines.  And I mean old.

Silvestris,
The etching in the picture was done by Lassell Ripley, who was a well-known wildlife artist from NYC.  Frank Harper lived in Raleigh, NC, and was a member of the Roanoke-Tar River Gun Club that leased land on the Roanoke River.  Ripley and Harper were good friends, and Ripley came down often to turkey hunt with Harper on the Roanoke River.  Harper is doing the calling, and Ripley is doing the shooting.  This all happened back in the 1950s-60s.  It was during this same period just upriver on another tract I received my introduction to the wild turkey.  Sixty years is a while back.....

Finally.....this is the last one....LOL!!!

In 2019, I decided I was going to make some Turpin style box calls.  Little did I know what I was getting myself into when I started.  It's been an interesting learning process, and I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know some very fine people.  This is the last of the Turpin boxes I cut out and started in 2019.

Yesterday a customer posted on FB this picture of a fine gobbler he had killed hunting with one of my Turpin style hen boxes. Looking at the picture I can tell this turkey call has been hunted.  This is why callmakers enjoy making turkey calls. Turkey calls should show the battle scars and blood stains of days afield. The memories you make hunting with a turkey call will last long after the days to hunt are past and shelf ornaments have no value......
