also new to here last year, and missed the sign up. 26 years old been at them for 16 years. been out of state several times, will be completing my slam with a merriums this year. of course the most prized bird is being able to take a hometown Mississippi gobbler every year. would love to join. don't know anybody, but I figured this would be a good way to learn some folks on the forum

Lol, I like that last one.

Anybody have a buddy they can recruit? I have 3 guys I got ahold of that haven't showed up yet. Leaves us with a few spots still open. I'll give it to about the third week of February before I stop reserving any spots and recruit from the random thread completely.

Swamp chickens , field turkeys ,hung up , spur of the moment ?

Post by: Thundermtn on February 13, 2016, 04:47:25 PM
Alright, we are up to 6 guys now. Looks like a few of the guys I talked to aren't going to sign up, so once Jim submits his ideas for a team name we'll vote and have OG move this thread to the team stickies.

If anybody has someone else they want on this team pm them and see if they're game. Then I'll have the mods fill the rest of the spots from the random sign-up thread.

I am guessing that any chances of having people from Team #47 on AT on this team are not going anywhere?
Title: Re: Forming a team - 47?
Post by: Thundermtn on February 13, 2016, 06:47:29 PM
Not really, that's OK though, I'm not going to press anyone to hard. I would prefer to keep this team a little more active as far as participation goes, getting guys that don't really love to turkey hunt to sign up may dull the contest here a little. This way the guys that post and hunt a lot have better shot at being on a fun team.

I'm going to keep it invite only for now. Trying to put together a team with people I know and fairly active posters. The goal is to have a team thread with a TON of turkey stories. This way we always have action on the team. I've been on other teams where several guys put down big numbers but rarely post, and guys that sign up and that's the last you hear from them. Doing it this way I know the team might miss out on some people that kill a lot of birds that are relatively new here but don't really have any other good way to ensure that just about every team member will have a post on the last page because that's when things are the most fun.

Well I finally found another box of longbeard #6 1 7/8oz .my weather be SA 459 with Indian creek choke love the 1 7/8 load but not so much with the 1 3/4 oz load of #6 long beard .seem like every where I go they only have the 1 3/4 oz .found one box hidden behind a bunch of the 1 3/4oz .with the stock choke I would barely consider this gun a 20yrd gun but with the Indian creek its very leathal pass 40yrds .killed last year at 47 and it patterns well at 50yrds .
Title: Re: Forming a team - 47?

It's funny how much work and looking for goes into turkey shells.

I finally ran out of Rem. Hevishot 1&3/4 #6's a couple years ago. Spent a lot of time, effort, and $ into finding a hard hitter that patterned well for my gun as I swore I'd never go back to lead after several botched kills with Win. Supreme 2oz. high speeds over the years. Now I have a 45 yard hammer with big money shells and all the birds on this new box of shells are 13 yards and in. Damn birds!

I'm going to vote #17. #10 was real close though.

This SA 459 was so bad with the factory turkey choke I thought it would never even make to the woods with me .it almost shot magnum blend with factory choke well enough to go but just did not have enough  confidence in it .now with Indian creek choke it's a hammer .i have a 28" barrel 835 with a star dot choke that shoots  incredible with magnum blend and that's my go to gun .but the SA459 is so light and easy to carry I really like hunting with .

That's pretty cool having 3 different species to shoot. I'll just be hunting easterns here in Mo. We have quite a few birds here in southern part of the state. I have a couple of farms that have both hardwoods and fields. Them field turkeys are evil, lol. I used to hunt only public but the goobers down here will set up right on top of ya. All they want to do is kill. The wife is into now so I try to get a place where she has first crack at a longbeard. We both killed in same field last year within 2 hours. They love my jake mobile with a full fan.

Hey guys, I'd be glad to join if you still need some members. (replying to a PM, thanks for the invite!) I live in SE Michigan and have no problem killing a good bird here every year. I have a deer hunting lease in SE ohio that I also turkey hunt on if I have time.

Looking to get some kids into birds this year, my daughter and some niece and nephews. I'll be traveling to Kansas and Nebraska around May 1 time after Michigan's 1st season wraps up to try for some Rio/Merriams.

Let me know if I'm in!

Nice, well if we are gonna be slaying together I'll introduce myself.

Brian, SE Michigan, 29 years old. Been turkey hunting here in Michigan for 15 years. Top goals are to slam out in the next few years, and working on that lifetime "state slam" Love turkey hunting, working the birds I'm a diaphragm caller. If anyone is ever interested in swapping a hunt I have some decent access for turkeys in Michigan!

Also big into ice fishing, hitting the great lakes and rivers for monster walleye in the springtime as well as turkey hunting......HUGE whitetail deer bowhunter.......would love to travel around and go after bear, elk, moose etc someday! Look forward to slaying with you guys and getting to know everyone!
Title: Re: The Strut Stoppers

Right on. I go fishing for salmon and steelhead up there every few years in Muskegon. MI has some goods birds, and probably more bow shops than any other state in America.
Title: Re: The Strut Stoppers
Post by: iliveintrees on February 26, 2016, 10:23:07 PM
Yeah, the salmon will be gone before long........i fish near traverse city every year, they'll be no more significant salmon runs within 5 years.   :(

Steelhead and lakers are still very good!

Hello Boys-

Understand you folks would be willing to have this crusty old turkey hunter to help round out your team.  ::) If you'll have me I'm in. A few words about my self;

I hail from Battle Creek Creek MI, although I have lived in N. Carolina and Indiana. Dad started me hunting and fishing as soon as I could carry a gun or hold a rod. (He's still with us at 82), cottontails, pheasant, deer, racoon, ducks geese. Started turkey hunting in Missouri in the early 90s as we didn't have very many birds in Michigan back then. We started at Rebels Cove a 5,000 acre WMA and then had a 450 acre farm lease for 12 seasons. It worked well as I usually tagged a couple gobblers down there and that would take any pressure off to kill a bird in Michigan. These days I get a bigger kick out of taking newbies and kids turkey hunting, paying it forward as it were.

I love to talk turkey and enjoy a good yarn so you won't have any problem with me disappearing or not posting. I was a Web Pro-Staffer on the T&TH forum for many years with thousands of posts until it died a slow death after the Magazine ceased publication.

Please let me know if I'm on the team so I can remove my name from the random registration thread.

Thanks! Jeff

You're on! Glad to have you. MO in the late 80's-early90's was maybe the best turkey hunting in the whole world then. It is still really good but we have too many predators to get back to those numbers. I'll have plenty of stories this year, I'll be chasing a boss gobbler and hunting with kids so it's going to be eventful. Welcome to the team!

Thanks Thundermtn!

Love the team name as I shoot a Tru-Glo "Strut Stopper" choke tube by Banser out of my Winchester 1300. I see you are from Missouri, we hunted up in Schuyler Co. near the Lancaster area, it was only a few miles south of the Iowa line.

Look forward to sharin' some turkey tales with y'all this season!

regards, Jeff

Just took the Knoxx AR style stock off my 835.it was causing the gun to kick and hit you in the face .i just installed a Boyd thumb hole stock and I'm trying to get a 20" barrel now .with the Boyd stock the cheek weld is perfect for me .last year I was lucky enough to pick us a star dot choke for it .im ditching the 28" barrel or more turkey hunting friendly 20"
Title: Re: The Strut Stoppers
Post by: Thundermtn on February 27, 2016, 10:20:01 PM
20" is a two edged sword. It may not pattern as good as a longer barrel and you're sacrificing some speed + you get more blast and kick with less sight radius. It is WAY more manuverable thought if you're a dedicated run and gun hunter and have to hole up in weird spots quick when checking a bird. It's also less movement if you have one sneak in quiet from a weird direction. My favorite is a 22" or 24" for a good compromise.

I'm running a 26" with 1" ext. choke now, it's held me up twice that I can remember with that length but I like getting as much speed as I can without going to old school goose gun length.

I just got a 24" barrel off eBay .i am planning on having my 28" cut down now.i have hunted with the 28" since the early 90's and it has never been a problem .last year I picked a 22"'barrel sa459 turkey shot gun and it's so much fun to hunt with it made think about making my 835 more fun to hunt with.

Sounds like you'll have some fun and diverse shotguns.

I shot my first 3 gun competition last weekend, with my turkey gun. I did ok for my first time and being the only guy running a pump. 38th out of 46. The turkey gun was slow to load, but I also had zero shotgun malfunctions vs. the race guns that almost all had at least one problem. I'm going to find an old wingmaster with a rough stock and some bluing problems and rebuild it for a silky smooth high cap. fun gun.

Won't let me delete my own post it says but I posted to delete. 2 more Missouri boys that's cool. Guess I'll stay here in the south for season. Seems to work well for me. Hunt over around west plains on some private land. Got a couple spots here in Ripley and Oregon I hunt too.
I love the 24" barrel on my mossy 835. Got a kicks .680 ported choke and I shoot win. 3 1/2" supremes. Haven't tried the longbeard but most my birds are 20 yards if possible.

Checking in. Pulled a trail camera card today.Turkey numbers are down in this part of the state compared to where they were in the late 90s/early 2000s but I plan on bagging a couple.

Our season starts here in SC on March 20. I will be out the following week. We have plenty of birds on our farm in the Low Country, so shouldn't be a problem getting one on the books. I feel like I just recovered from deer season. Oh well, time to chase another animal around the woods!

We had a looonnng deer season this year! The spring woods are more fun to me though. I put less emphasis on how I do it verses getting it done+ I get to make noise and talk turkey

I bought an aluminum pot and peg call. Man does that thing sound good. I've always been a diaphragm caller, but will be branching out this year.

You'll have fun with that pot call, the ability to slightly change pitch on purrs mid-run is why I usually only yelp and cluck with a mouth call. The realism I can get with a pot on that type of sound makes sure I have about three more of them in the vest than I usually need.

The first daffodils are getting ready to pop here, won't be long now.

I've got an HS strut bag. Lots of pockets but I seem to have something for every pocket, lol. I'm gonna listen here Saturday morning and see if maybe 1 will give me a courtesy gobble.

Nothing special as far as my vest goes. Nice cushion for sitting. Lightweight run and gun type vest.

Using a Mossy Oak Super Elite III I think... Had the original one, worked well but not much of a cushion. This one has a nicer pad. Issue is that I tend to lose strikers out of the pockets if I'm not careful. Luckily, I tend to find them when I backtrack. I've been using a Cabelas turkey lounger too, the only problem with that is sometimes I'm so comfortable, I don't move when I should. I stay put for too long.

Cabelas Tactical Tatr. I got in on clearance a few years ago. I love the way the striker pouches are. Haven't lost one yet. I just wish it had more pockets for pot calls. I love getting them out of the classifieds here.

I've had the Hunters Specialties SUV vest for about 7 seasons. It's everything I need in a vest, great detachable seat cushion, padded shoulder straps, sternum strap, many zippered compartments and pockets and a lined game bag. I always carry my tagged birds out in the game bag. Carrying a gobbler over your shoulder is just for the hero shots in videos boys. Besides getting blood everywhere, the Missouri toms were always loaded with ticks and they will leave a cooling carcass for a warm body in a heartbeat. With the shoulder carry they will jump off the bird's legs into your hairline and down the neck of your shirt. THAT is the voice of experience.

I used to loose strikers too (who hasn't), but about 3 years ago I went to a zippered, see thru mesh, pouch system for all my strikers, conditioning kit and chalk. The whole pouch fits in my vest pocket and I haven't lost a striker since. The Fearless brand I have are sold at home improvement stores like Home Depot, Menards and Lowes, about 10 bucks for a 3 pk. Gitcha one, you won't regret it.

Forgot to turn on the trail camera so no good pics. Saw a bird strutting 1.5 miles west of my house this morning.

Edit: Standing on my back deck listening to birds gobble right now. If they aren't on me, they are real damn close to my property.

First 70 degree day of the year in Michigan, usually don't get one of those until April.

All the snow is gone and with photo period change (longer and warmer days) the birds will be spreading out soon. The local flock, which was in my back yard several times this winter, has 29 birds in it with at least 4 gobblers. One of them is gonna wear a tag...

We seem to have lost our fearless leader, he hasn't posted in this team thread since Feb 29 th and his last post anywhere on the OG board was Mar 1 st.

Anyone heard from Thundermtn ?

Our team thread in the Child Boards is untouched. We need to start a Roll Call Topic and shift this conversation over there.

I'd start one but don't wanna step on anyone's toes...

Laid eyes on em. They were 10 yards south of the property line. 4 gobblers a handful of jakes and a few hens. Repositioned trail cams yesterday. Have a prescribed burn planned around April 1st.

Edit watching 16 gobblers play grab  right now.

Well, got out this afternoon after work and patterned my Remington...I'd say she's ready to rock and roll a gobbler! This pattern is at 40 yards.
