Title: My latest turkey slayer!! (patterning pics added)
Post by: RutnNStrutn on March 21, 2020, 01:33:41 PM
Added a new (to me) turkey slayer to my arsenal. :icon_thumright: Next time I go hiking up a mountain after gobblers with Hayudog, instead of toting my heavy 12 gauge land cannon, I'll be carrying this lightweight shooter!! :icon_thumright: :fud: :turkey:
I bought a used single shot H & R Topper in 20 gauge. I had the barrel cut down to 22 inches, and tapped to take a choke. Then I had the barrel drilled and tapped for a scope rail. Next I replaced the old wood stock with an AR style stock. I topped it off with an Indian Creek choke with .562 constriction and a Trijicon dual illumination (tritium and fiber optic) RMR green dot scope.
I'll be shooting Apex TSS Small Town Hunting Blend #7.5/#9's through it, and I'm super excited to get out to the range and see what she can do!! :turkey2:
Here she is.....

This will be my first venture into the world of TSS. I've killed most of my gobblers with 12 gauge 3-1/2" #4 or #5 shot. From everything I've read and seen, it should be a worthwhile experiment. Since I'm stepping down to 20 gauge 3", I'm going with the TSS.

Patterned the new slayer today......BUT, the range I was a guest at limits scatterguns to a 25 yard and 40 yard "plinking" range. Plus, the wind was howling and kept blowing our targets over. Still, the gun performed well, and hammered the target at 25 yards, and did well at 40 yards. I'm going to wait to pattern in more controlled conditions, and take pictures of the results when I go to my club in SC. Overall though, I am satisfied for the first round of testing. :icon_thumright:

Did a little range time today. On the 20 gauge, I shot 3" Apex TSS loads using their Small Town Hunting Blend, which is a #7-1/2 and #9 duplex load. At 40 yards I got 281 hits on a 8-1/2" x 11" paper target. 87 of those hits were on the body of the gobbler.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/4271dcc66473d60020518efc1d0fc456.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/06e6f4e03c0f017d3aaa72fec9e3646a.jpg)

Next, I moved out to 60 yards with the same gun and load. Not quite the numbers some other guys have been achieving with TSS. 97 hits on a 8-1/2" x 11" paper target, with 27 on the body of the gobbler. I think that ethically this is a 50 yard gun. But that's OK! 80% of my gobblers have been at 20 yards or less, with the rest in the 30 & 40 yard ranges. I've only taken 2 gobblers beyond 50 yards, both at 54 yards. I also switched over to an Indian Creek choke and TSS on my 12 gauge land cannon this year.
At 40 yards with a 3-1/2" Small Town Hunting Blend of #7-1/2 & #9, it put 382 hits on an 8-1/2" x 11" paper target, with 162 hits on the body of the gobbler.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/17d57bc08f92e09e57c27f13a423dd3e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/647c1774ee746ab5adddef500cd9a241.jpg)

At 60 yards, the land cannon put 170 hits on the 8-1/2" x 11" paper target, with 75 hits on the body of the gobbler. Considering the target isn't life size, which equates to more body hits on a real gobbler, I'd say that set up is a legit 60 yard gun. Not that I've ever shot a bird at 60 yards, but it's pretty cool to see those numbers with your gun.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/d8ae29d15102450ee9e14df900c66446.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200406/ae4a0e178599d3b19508840c8e0ffe4a.jpg)

They look good.  You're getting a better pellet count than me with my 20 shooting handloads. Now you just need some turkeys to hunt!
