For slate the best looking/sounding I've ever had was a black limba grey slate from lights out turkey calls. Every other slate I've owned has disappointed

Red slate either Buster or Nathan Taylor

Green slate Brad Roberts (hard to find) or Mark Cornelius

Grey slate Paul Platz and Darren Dawkins (neither easy to get in a wood pot)

There are a lot of great slates out there but Pat Strawser is in a class of his own,
his slates will get soft but also can sound like a crystal or glass

Mark Cornelius , Nathan Taylor ... look at matching you pot call to the conditions you have to hunt ... wind , rain etc... for the pot call surface your looking for, don't get stuck just on slate ....

Mark Cornelius love the green slate I got from him, very pretty and plays very easy.

I would recommend a Buster Halford red slate for sound quality. Not sure if he makes a "beautiful" pot but they sure sound good.

For me to only pick one slate it would be a Lonnie Mabry cedar slate

For gray slate where craftsmanship and sound come together and fairly easy to get I would look at the Halloran Zebrawood slate. Lots of other fine builders out there with really pretty work and wood choice I just have not run many of them.

I like my Footballer persimmon gray slate as well. Nathan Taylor makes a fine call too in red green or gray. My favorite green slate out of the 7 I have tried is one of Buster's green slate pots. Paul Hicks has excellent craftsmanship and a really good sound.

Nothing wrong at all with a MAC slate either. Just may have to wait a little bit. Same with Blackstone.

Where the actual beauty of the pot material is standard but build finish, functionality and sound still excels it's hard to beat a Dawkins plastic pot or a Parks gobbler slate based on the sound of them I have heard.

Truth right here. I would add eddie wynn to that list though.

There's lots of makers of great calls. They all sound slightly dif so your ear may lean toward one or another. Schafer, Mac, Halloran and Lonzo make great slates. Nowadays you need to mention a type slate as well.
