I have a 835 tactical turkey and for the life of me can't find a combo that patterns well. I'm seeing people getting 200+ at 40 yards and I can't get 50. I've had other people shoot it and tried different shells and chokes. Any help would be greatly appreciated since we are already 2 weeksinto season!

What shells and choke have you run. The 835 is one of the best patterning guns out there.

X2.  835 like chokes in the .670-.680 range.  Some chokes are SSX, Indian Creek, Pure Gold, Hevi-13, Stardot and Sumtoy.  They will shoot just about every shell well but they really like the Hevi-13 6 and 7's and LB 5 and 6's.  Not sure what you have tried but give us some info.  I would recommend deep cleaning and polishing the barrel as well.  Info for that is in one of the posts here.   :welcomeOG:  Great site and plenty of GREAT Guys and info here.

I have tried jelly head .690 with 3" mag blends and #6 long beard xr. Also kicks .680 choke with mag blend and #6 long beard xr and hevi shot #6

99, what does your barrel look like after you give it a good cleaning?  Most will look dull and have light machine marks in them.  Polishing the barrel will help the pattern.  Second, you have chosen quality ammo with the LB's and Hevi-13.  I would suggest a choke in the .670-.675 range for your gun.  Look in this section for 835 patterns with the ammo you would like to use and see some patterns with some of the chokes I mentioned above.  I shoot an 835 with a .670 Pure Gold choke and 3 1/2" Hevi 7's.  She will put 300 plus in 10 at 40 even pattern with this combo (never got a total count).  Clark (allaboutshooting) has done a lot of work with the SSX choke and Hevi ammo so take a look at his site as well.  One other thing, not sure what you are shooting at when patterning but paper that is 30" x 30" is a must.  You need to shoot at 15 yards, with dove loads to see if you have a POA/POI issue and when patterning your turkey load, the bigger paper will allow you to see what that load is doing on a larger scale.  Good Luck and keep the questions coming.

I've got a mossberg 835 I've had for years that gun patterns awesome. I got the older primos jelly head choke tube I shot Winchester longbeards #6 shot and at 40 yards in a 10 inch circle I'm geting around 240 pellets. Is your jelly head the older one or the new one, the news don't shot no where close to the older ones. That could be your problem if it's the new one

Buy you a pure gold 670 throw those 3 in magblend in her and let it eat, but do deep clean that barrel

.680 and .690 are way to big for factory shells, if you was shooting heavy shot or nitros I can see it. You need to be around the .665 to .675 to get maximum performance out of the 835, remember 835 has a 10 Guage barrel and it seems to throw the pattern on .650 .655. But who am i. I clean my barrel after ever shot, carry a bore snake in ya pack, give that barrel good cleaning make sure u have no wax build up from your wadding. Good luck

I agree. PG 670 throws great patterns out of my 835. Even better then my Stardot.

Mine shoots 3" Longbeard 6's through a star dot 676 for excellent patterns.  Try the deep cleaning and then foul the bore with a few shots. Is it shooting to point of aim?  Shoot paper and evaluate some shells with that kicks 680, that would be my pick.   Longbeard  3" 1050 fps shells might help.  Or just go with massive pellet count shells like 7s

I used to run a Brileys .675 and shot the old white Hevi 13 3" 6's and I have a Star Dot that I used to shoot the 3.5" Hevi 13 7's thru.  It liked both combo's but I did deep clean the barrel not long after purchasing it.  I also run Win. HV 3.5" 5's thru the star dot also and it likes that combo as well and I tried a jellyhead in it and it shot the 3.5" 7's decent.  Heck I even picked up some 3" Hevi 4's from Natchez dirt cheap that shoot good out of the factory ulti-full choke.  I would deep clean and check your POA/POI, I scoped my 835 a few years ago and thats been the best investment I've made.

How big of a piece of paper are you shooting at? Are you drawing a circle then shooting or are you drawing a circle over the densest part of the pattern after shooting?

I am using the Jelly Head with winchester longbeard # 5 and it puts a pretty decent pattern. I'll try to get a pic when I can get back out of the city.

I should also mention I get the best pattern from a 3" instead of the 3.5"
