Jason's first Turkey

I took my daughters boyfriend, Jason, on his first ever turkey hunt today. He took his hunter safety last weekend and got his license yesterday. We heard a few turkeys in the morning but it had rained most of the night and the turkeys weren't talking much. I decided to take a hike in a different area and finally got an answer. It sounded like a gobbler or Jake yelp. We headed that way and finally caught a glimpse of them. There were 10-15 longbeards and they were headed straight for the top of the ridge. After we made our way up the hill we never saw them or heard them again. We headed back to the original area and came up over a hill when I spotted a turkey. We froze and the turkeys saw something they wanted to check out. So here they came. I told Jason to just freeze and not move. I was going to have him sit next to a tree in front of us when the turkeys went out of sight. Just as they went out of sight I told him to get his gun up and was starting to head over to a tree when one of the turkeys flew into a tree and could see us. Now we couldn't move. A few seconds later I see turkeys coming up the hill. I told him to pick one out and shoot it. About that time another turkey flew into a tree behind the turkeys walking up the hill. Jason put the crosshairs on the bird in the tree and pulled the trigger. The turkeys didn't go anywhere. So he handed me the gun and I was going to try and scatter them but they all ran off together. We took some pics and I spotted a few more turkeys coming our way. Something spooked them before I could get a shot. So we headed for some breakfast. As we drove down the road I came around a corner and there were a bunch of turkeys in the road. Some were gobblers and they were strutting. There were 9 longbeards and 20 hens. A couple of the longbeards were NICE. We drove by close enough to kill them with a rock. It was a great morning. We saw quail, doves, deer, 1 little buck, falcon, redtail hawk, and a bunch of turkeys. Lots of fun for a first time turkey hunt.
