I had an apple tree on my back lawn get overloaded with apples a few years ago, and up root itself. Rather than just bucking it up and burning it, I decided to slab some 2.5 inch boards out of the main trunk with my chainsaw, and let them dry in my barn for two years. I brought the boards with me to Turkey Trot this summer, and had Marlin take a look at them to see if it was anything he was interested in. He liked what I had, so we put them in the back of his truck and he took them home with him.
Fast forward to the beginning of last month, he called me up to tell me he found a lid that the apple I brought him liked. Surinam Ironwood. He played a call he had on the bench over the phone a bit, and I thought it was sounding pretty strong. He said he will hang onto it for a few weeks then send it out.
Went to the mailbox after lunch today and found it sitting there waiting for me.
I've got a pretty good collection of fiddleboxes, but this one for sure is going no where. Likely be handed down to my daughter. Pretty cool to have a call made by him, from wood off land that's been in the family for 7 generations.

That's great.  Did you plane it before giving it to him?  I have some two year old walnut and poplar that was blown down on my place that I had sawed.  Was thinking of doing the same thing.

I like the history behind it. I am partial to apple wood, trying to get a few calls made from it. My first job other than shoveling snow when I was young was picking drops in the apple orchards around my house. I only have one call made with it so far, sure would like to get some more in the future though. Looks nice. I was bummed to find out all the apple trees where I grew up are all down now, sure would have liked to have gotten some.

I didn't plane it, he took it rough cut.
The wood you want is from the stump to the first set of limbs.

Amazing call and great memories .. you picked the right one to make this beautiful instrument ... Marlin is one of the best ... I always say history of the call is just as important as the hens in the box... congratulations
